This tree is in the Clonbinane/Wandong area. It was never a permanent lookout. See Phil Searl's comment below.

Trevor also reported: It has survived up right through several large fires including 7/2/2009, the Black Saturday fires.
Phil Searl (Mt. Hickey FLO) supplied the following in Nov 2019: The tree with the spikes in it predates fire towers. It was used by a horseman who would ride through the bush and climb trees that had those spikes driven into them to look for smoke, and if no smoke was sighted he would ride on to the next tree and repeat the process. I'm not sure what he did if smoke was seen, because this would have been before radios were used by the Forest Commission.
