Notes supplied by David Bannear contained an engineer report. The wooden tower was inspected in 1978 and found: "safe for another 10-15 years". An inspection in 1985 found the tower in "very good condition and could be expected to stay in service for a considerable time yet". Another inspection was carried out in November 1988 and the conclusion was that: "the structure has deteriorated markedly over the last three years. The round timber legs were splitting and decaying from the centre and although considered to be safe at present, will further deteriorate at an accelerated rate from now on". "In general the whole structure is showing its age and should be replaced with a steel fire tower over the next two years".
